Club Balattou
Over 35 years of world music!

The legendary Club Balattou, the capital of World Music in Montreal, which for more than 35 ans plays an essential role on the cultural and artistic scene of the Metropolis, which is at the origin of the great history of African Nights.

It was in 1985 that LamineTouré, this great precursor and let's say a little daring, decided to take over a small club on St-Laurent Boulevard in order to open the first tropical discotheque in Canada which, already at that time, hosted on its stage, on a weekly basis , all world music artists from here and elsewhere, and this, in right in the heart of the Portuguese district. The Club Balattou (which means Ball for all, all rhythms, all cultures) is immediately all the rage! We dance to the most recent African, Latin and West Indian hits. At the rendezvous, an already multicultural public joined by Quebecers, curious, open to the world, eager for new things. A place of exchange and discovery par excellence, the reputation of Club Balattou goes far beyond borders. Proof of its great notoriety, more than twenty songs written about Club Balattou are played around the world.

A pioneer in its field, it is one of the first clubs to have offered a stage for musical performances and more particularly for performances by world music artists. It is on these same stages that the first edition of the Festival International Nuits d'Afrique was launched, put forward by Productions Nuits d'Afrique. The Club Balattou, this place of unique exchanges and encounters which regularly transforms its dance floor into an artistic podium has so far encouraged the talent of several thousand world music artists from here and elsewhere and has makes their audience a real connoisseur always looking for quality, discoveries and exclusive musical journeys.
